Causes and Onset
The Ice Prison is triggered by a natural catastrophe: an enormous iceberg overturns, sliding under the Nautilus and lifting it into a confined space between the ice ceiling and the seafloor. Captain Nemo explains that "an enormous block of ice, an entire mountain, has toppled over" due to erosion at its base, causing it to somersault and trap the submersible. The Nautilus is left lying on its starboard side, its furniture overturned and its interior in chaos. The captain calmly outlines the two possible ways to die: "death by crushing" or "death by asphyxiation," noting that the air tanks will supply oxygen for only two more days. The crew is imprisoned at a depth of 350 meters, with the Ice Bank above them and the overturned block jammed between the side walls, forming a genuine tunnel of ice about twenty meters wide.

Captain Nemo, ever resourceful, orders the ship's pumps to inject streams of boiling water into the surrounding space, raising the temperature from -7°C to -1°C and preventing the water from solidifying. The Final Breakthrough
